My Grandmother’s Death

After attending my grandma’s funeral, I really understood that death is something that will happen to all of us, even me. I’m not quite sure what that means and I’m actually a little scared about it right now.

Pirate Movie

This week we did an animation project in my class and I decided to make a (VERY) short film about a pirate who wasn’t feeling too well. Mrs. Rogers didn’t think it was as funny as I did. She appreciated the technical work, but thought my subject matter was inappropriate. I guess if I going to bother to do all that work, I should be careful not to offend my audience.

The “Financial Crisis”

This week all the news was about the “financial crisis”. I’m not sure exactly what that means, but it has made me think a lot about how hard it must be to be an adult. Having to worry about mortgages and stuff just seems like it must be tough.

New Baseball Glove

My dad gave me a new glove today. I have always thought of my old glove as the only one that I would ever own, but my hand has grown, and I can’t really use it anymore. It isn’t easy to face the idea that I won’t be using it considering all the long hours that I spent playing catch with my dad. That glove is a link to my childhood and the carefree days of my life before all my recent troubles started. It bears the grooves and stains and worn laces of my dad’s investment into my improvement and our camaraderie on the grass in teh backyard. In its weather appearance, I also see all the places where I carried it: central park to play with my friends, my Uncle’s house where we always played catch after Thanksgiving dinner, or the early years when I carried it in the back of the car wherever we went just in case I could talk my dad into playing catch in the parking lot while we waited for Pizza Hut to make our pizza. This experience has been a moment of “letting go” and it hasn’t been easy. I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do with this glove. It looks at me and I imagine it having feelings of resentment. Is this what it’s like to let go of other things? What about letting go of friendships that aren’t working out? Or moving on to new schools and letting to to the way that things used to be? I’m seeing how this will help me to learn a lot in future situations.

Scavenger Hunt Fun

Our school hosted a photo scavenger hunt, and I had a chance to meet many new people who I were unfamiliar to me only days earlier. I was even brave enough to try some alternate clothing styles while trying to earn points for our team. It worked like this: each color team was trying to earn points for certain wacky pictures, and we could earn double points if we would dress in the opposite gender clothing. I had never tried anything like this, and it made me really nervous. I had seen a teacher do it during the Lawson Idol contest, so I figured that it couldn’t be the worst thing in a world, but I had to wear a dress! My mom helped me find something that would fit. While I was putting it on, I felt totally nervous and I wondered what people would think of me. However, the interaction with other people in the room made it so much easier and I realized that I wasn’t alone. In fact, I started to see how many people have similar experiences, and I think this made me more open to seeing the perspectives of other people. I hope that it will make me more tolerant and open-minded in the future because even now I can see the way that an open mind will lead to happiness.
